A few days later, having accepted older members, the association changed its name to «POSNOVIS», from February 14 it became known as «UNOVIS» («Affirmers of the New Art»). The core of the group led by Kazimir Malevich consisted of about 40 people. Among them are Ivan Gavris, Emma Gurovich, Vera Ermolaeva, Nina Kogan, Lazar Lisitsky, Evgenia Magaril, Efim Royak, Nikolai Suetin, Lazar Khidekel, Ilya Chashnik, Ivan Chervinko, Lev Yudin and others. UNOVIS was created as a «party of Suprematism», the core of the reform movement, which proclaimed the Suprematist system not only as a leading innovative artistic movement, but also as a life-building program. The utopian project of the expansion of the aesthetics of Suprematism into social reality was the main tenet of the UNOVIS party ideology.
A charter and a program were developed, a creative committee was established, which included Kazimir Malevich, Vera Ermolaeva and Nina Kogan, Lazar Khidekel, Ilya Chashnik, Nikolai Suetin, Ivan Chervinko and others. Special attributes were introduced — black squares sewn on the sleeves of jackets and printing in the form of a black square. To join UNOVIS, a questionnaire was filled out. To promote its activities, the group issued small-circulation printed publications made by lithographic or typewritten methods — leaflets, wall newspapers, home-made magazines. The main slogan of the creative association was — «The overturning of the old world of arts will be etched across your palms!»
The ideology of UNOVIS was based on the idea of collective creativity: joint work on the Suprematist design of the urban environment. At the exhibitions, the group’s works were exhibited without attribution.
The group launched its activities simultaneously in several directions, taking on the cultural initiative both within the framework of the educational institution, and in the artistic and social life of Vitebsk in general. Inside the school, the group became the most active structure, implementing Kazimir Malevich’s pedagogical program to educate artists of a new formation. One of the most important missions of UNOVIS considered the transfer of the artistic system of Suprematism from the field of pure art to the design of the environment. The creative activity of UNOVIS included both easel experiments and design work based on the «collective», «general Unovis» style.
During 1920-1922, by order of local authorities, the UNOVIS group produced Suprematist panels for building facades, festive banners and stands, Suprematist painting of trams. Also, a festive decoration of the Vitebsk theater was made for the solemn meeting of delegates and workers of the city committee for combating unemployment and the decoration of the city by May 1, 1920. Under the leadership of Kazimir Malevich, samples of Suprematist fabrics and signs were made.
Orders for posters and brochure covers produced by a local publisher gave UNOVIS the opportunity to experiment with printing.
As a creative association, UNOVIS organized exhibitions in Vitebsk and Moscow, and also exhibited the works of a number of its members at the First Russian Art Exhibition in Berlin in 1922.
UNOVIS considered its\u2019 indispensable duty to be social activities related to the promotion of new forms of art: meetings, lectures, performances. On February 6, 1920 UNOVIS gave a meeting and two performances — «Victory over the Sun» and «Suprematist Ballet». «Victory over the Sun» was staged with sets and costumes by Vera Ermolaeva, «Suprematist Ballet» was conceived and realized by Nina Kogan. In 1920-1921, Lazar Lissitzky developed a draft version of Victory over the Sun as an electromechanical performance.
In 1920-1921 UNOVIS announced the creation of its branches in Orenburg, Samara, Smolensk Perm, Yekaterinburg, Saratov and Odessa, which arose on the basis of art studios or Free Art Studios, where Malevich’s former students taught mainly.
Vitebsk UNOVIS existed until the summer of 1922. The activities of artists in the field of contemporary art caused dissatisfaction with the authorities, expressed in the lack of support and even in a number of repressive measures against the group of Kazimir Malevich, which led to the ousting of UNOVIS from the public life of the city. In the summer of 1922, Kazimir Malevich and most of the Unovists left for Petrograd.
The last time the UNOVIS group as a single collective performed at the Exhibition of paintings by Petrograd artists of all directions in 1923. Several artists moved away from general affairs or demonstrated a gravitation towards more moderate reforms in art. But these discrepancies did not affect the basis of Kazimir Malevich’s relationship with his students. The joint work of the former Unovists continued in Ginkhuk, opening a new page in the pedagogical and artistic activities of Kazimir Malevich.
